Megalopolis Vomitus

When art is attempted at such a self-possessed level, the only one who “gets it” is the artist. The rest of us lose $24.

Filmmaker Michael Cimino’s 1980 passion project, Heaven’s Gate, had United Artists’ backing but lost $37 million to a 219-minute, sybaritic dream turned dustbowl. (RIP Kris Kristofferson.)

Kevin Costner’s labor of love, The Postman (1997), had critics laughing their way to the bank at the cost of $50 million.

Francis Ford Coppola may have a canon of groundbreaking ingenuity (The Godfather series, Apocalypse NowThe Conversation), but he is also human and prone to spend $120 million of his own winery profits on a 40-year dream of melding Hamlet and Roman credo with today’s so-called enhancements in computer-generated imagery.

His story about utopian promise against an urban landscape of greed is intentionally convoluted and loose ended. So, despite your preconceived notions and patience with such a venture, every character is convoluted and loose ended. Nothing makes sense, and it’s quite boring at it.

A seasoned all-star cast of Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Jon Voight, Giancarlo Esposito, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Schwartzman, and Dustin Hoffman appear as if in a costume party where you leave your sense of humor at the door. There are architects, mayors, mistresses, journalists, and “fixers.” Not one character is supplied with context or resolution. There are sequences (like the wedding ceremony) that go on and on without anything going on, and then there are transitions that seem pivotal to the story that last but a minute.

Megalopolis is an overstuffed pillow of a movie, packed with incoherent dialogue, fleshless characters, and shoddy CGI—the very technology Coppola was waiting on to fulfill his vision. And, it’s a vision only he will appreciate.

To the rest of us, it is a master class in recycling your own saliva or watching yourself pat your back in front of a mirror.

5 stars for following your dreams, -4 for losing everyone’s time, money, soul, and lunch.

Megalopolis (2024) * out of *****

Have you seen it? Was it just me, or was that the worst movie of the year?

Recovering,

RB

  1. I was afraid of this BUT…I liked that he went for it and the way he did it. One thing didn’t do was play the current hollywood game which makes me happy…I just wish it was better.

    1. Great point, Max, and I search for originality and groundbreakers every time I walk into the theatre. BUT, this one just reeked of pretentiousness and being audacious for the sake of being audacious, which doesn’t always play out if the execution lacks any empathy for any character. It was like Coppola using characters as pawns and characters using Coppola as a way to bulk their resume. I just couldn’t do it. I’m glad people like you have more patience than me, haha!

      1. I do have a soft spot for someone who wants to do something different…it just didn’t work this time…but after watching the new Star Wars series…oh yea…I hope he and more like him keeps trying.

            1. Oh, haha! I am pleased to say that I never even tried it. Just too busy. I “might” try that new Star Wars video game only because the graphics look really cool, and the setting is between “Empire” and “Jedi.” Haha!

            2. I won’t go into it…but they “forced” things they wanted…instead of a real producer they got an activist. I hope this flavor of the month ends soon. I just want to be entertained.
I didn’t think I would ever say…this made the prequels look like the originals lol.

            3. Wow! THAT bad, huh? It’s funny: I catch glances of the prequels from time to time and I like them more because I really like Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor. They really emulate a passion for the series. Everything else though…

            4. Yes that bad. But yes…there are parts of the prequels that I liked!
I’m not going to saw the W word because if I do I’ll get labeled a far right extemist…which I’m most certainly not…but Hollywood…an open letter…just entertain us…don’t try to teach us.

            5. Exactly…if you want to slip it between the lines…that is up to you but don’t blame us if we call you out on it hollywood.
On some people like me…it has the opposite effect…it pushes me to the right side. If I saw movies with the opposite agenda I would feel pushed to the left. Anyway…that is the reason I wanted this movie to be good….but you cannot win them all!

            6. Amen, Max. Well said too. Especially during these politically charged days. Hey, and thank you for the shout-out on Cujo! I can’t wait to read it. My dad showed me that one (same story: I was too young to watch it, but I love my dad for showing me these movies anyway).

  2. The only reason I was maybe tempted was Aubrey Plaza. 😀 … however, I think I’ll wait until I can watch it late one night in a few years from now and see what I think then.

Glad to hear Your Summer of Landscaping went well. 😀

    1. Aubrey is tolerable in this one. And, true-to-life Shia LaBeouf. But, the movie is so overstuffed that it’s difficult to appreciate the little time they are in it… Thank you for the landscaping kudos. We did it!

    1. Whoof. I dare you to see this one, Matt. It’s always good to see a dud once in a while. Of course, some liked FFC’s audacity. Fair enough. I doubt we will be appreciating this in the future, however.

      1. I’m not going to spend the little money I have on seeing a dud lol So I appreciate the heads-up. I want to see the horror film ‘Speak No Evil’ which has good reviews.
I hope your home projects including the landscaping went well mate. Cheers.

        1. Thanks, mate! The landscaping was probably the most physically demanding adventure of my life, but now that it is done, and the girls love playing on the grass, it was all worth it. School is in full swing. We are touring middle schools this semester, so very busy.

How are things with you? I want to see “Speak No Evil” as well.

I’m also excited to sneak in a few horror movies, now that it is October!

          Best to you,
          Bernie

          1. I commend you on fulfilling that audacious adventure and seeing to it that your girls can have fun on the lawn. Yippy!
The touring of schools sounds like a neat adventure as well. I wish you well friend.

Oh I am good. My life mainly consists of coffee, writing, gym, movies, sports and kids lol Everything is hunky dory and thank you for asking. Cheers.
