Challengers **1/2

While attempting a chic perspective on progressive egotism and its hopeful resolve to humility, Challengers pleasures itself with unbridled Gen-Z horniness. The outcome is both refreshing and monotonous, like Luca Guadagnino’s style-before-substance directing and superfluous timeline toying. There’s a sports movie in here too, but that mainly consists of flash cuts, closeups, and occasional lines like, “Are we talking about tennis?”

The good news is that there is not a second wasted between serves, vollies, and salacious desires in the threesome character (b)romance. This is the filmmaking of today, satisfying the TikTok brain with an array of nonsensical flashbacks and sex when things get too talky.

The performances in this “serious” rom-com are outstanding. I’ve admired Zendaya’s angsty acting since The Greatest Showman days, and the counterbalance in sophisticated newbies, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor, glides well during the first half of the movie.

There’s just not enough substance or believable exposition to justify the chemistry in the second half. One wonders if a chronological approach with less locker room talk would have aided the characters’ transition from selfish flings to selfless reflections. There’s also not enough cerebral pull in the script to warrant all the brain noise in the Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score. This digital fuzz worked in The Social Network (2010) and my favorite of last year, The Killer, but it’s a melodramatic sore thumb distraction in this one. (Imagine the Yello “Oh Yeah”-accompanied ending to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off while watching two men talk tennis in a sauna.)

If there are comparisons to movies like this when I was in my twenties, I’d bring up Toback’s Two Girls and a Guy (1997) and Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también (2001). Challengers might say it is Wimbledon (2004) on Viagra. If the two-men-and-one-woman emotional entanglement is done perfectly, it is still Jules et Jim (1962). Regarding the tennis movie, I still prefer Woody Allen’s Match Point (2005).

Like most of today’s flicks, it is all backhand material.

  1. Another movie I’m going to skip. The three way romance thing put me off. I mean I don’t have anything against throuples, but every modern movie that’s progressive seems to be pushing an agenda of sorts. Call me a conspiracy theorist or whatever, but a lot of these movies simply drill propaganda into your skull like Jimmy Kimmel does day after day. Not to say the right’s any better though. For every Kimmel we have a Tucker Carlson.

  2. Great review once again. I have to say that we completely disagree on the film and that’s understandable. It’s not the kind of movie everyone would enjoy. I’m not a fan of tennis but I really connected with the film’s theme of friendship. Here is why I loved it:

  3. Honestly I’m not that interested in this one and I don’t think Luca’s movies are for me. That said, I do love Zendaya in The Greatest Showman as well, her performance there is underrated I think. As far as sports movies go, I do prefer something like AIR which I find entertaining AND insightful.

Btw, I read in the comments that you’re directing a musical production? That’s awesome! Best of luck with that and with the move to your dream home!

    1. It’s not a bad movie. It’s not that good either. Maybe check it out for rent later? Haha!

Yeah, we just finished “Percy Jackson’s Lightning Thief.” It was a lot of fun.

Thank you for your good wishes! We move in two weeks!

It’ll be crazy but totally worth it in the long run!

      Best to you,
      RB

  4. Excellent review. This is definitely one of most anticipated films of the year. I’m a massive fan of Luca Guadagnino. Over a prosperous career, he has proven to be a fantastic Italian filmmaker. Many years ago, he made the captivating coming of age film “Call Me By Your Name”. Here’s why I loved it:

  5. Hey, Bernie! Have you been missing in action, or has WP kicked me out of my ‘subscribed’s’ again?

I’ve considered watching this one, just for the Zendaya factor 😀 … she is easy on the eye. 🙂 … but sports stories just don’t turn my crank. The last one I saw was the one about the ‘battle of the sexes’ with Emma Stone, and although it was good to get some (fictionalised) backstory about the whole circus, that was about it for me …

… I wonder, if one did an analysis as to why Rocky, (just another sports story, from a certain point of view 🙂 ) for instance, was so successful, and translated that into an updated ‘sports’ story it might not work.

‘Bruised’, with Halle Berry and Sheila Antim was another ‘sports’ story that worked for me … annnnd … I’m beginning to see a pattern here 😀 … it’s how well developed the characters are, that has to be right up there with the ‘sport’ in question.

… read in the comments that you’re moving into your dream-and-forever-home soon… huge congratulations, my friend. 😀

    1. So good to hear from you! I’ve been MIA due to directing a musical production and moving to a temporary house and preparing to move to a (hopefully) 20-30 year dream home. I miss you and hope all is well with you and your “kneeles,” as my 3-year-old likes to call them 🙂

Yeah, the sports movie is a more complex genre because you have the diehards who want more sports talk/action, and then you have peeps like us who enjoy character development. Blending both seamlessly is difficult to do. You’re right, too – the sports aspect markets the movie’s success in a way.

I prefer a “sports” movie like “Air” that was about a sport but included more drama, thrilling moments, and humor without showing any moments of basketball on a court.

Thanks again for reaching out! Only one more month of school before SUMMER BREAK!

      Best to you!

  6. I do love your impassioned reviews, Bernie! I was wondering about this movie, had hoped it would be more about tennis than threesomes. Oh well, one less movie to watch is not a bad thing 😉

    1. So good to hear from you, my friend in New Zealand! My family and I have been in between houses and waiting to move to Lone Tree, Colorado. Movies are at the bottom of my list amid the craziness. I do hope to compile a list for summer reading soon. Do you have an impossible-to-put-down you recommend?

      1. Oh, moving houses is one of the few things I really dread. I hope your move will be smooth and easy and your new house and environment great! What reads are you looking for? Fantasy, science fiction, non fiction, lit fiction?? I can send you links to a few recent reviews of books I loved 😄

        1. Yeah, May 24-25 will be rough, but we are also ready to move into our dream home. The pain is worth it, haha! Lately, I’ve been more into non fiction, biographical, and historical. A link would be much appreciated! Thank you! Happy Monday!

          1. Fingers crossed everything goes according to plan! For non-fiction, my most recent recommendation would be Feldman Barrett: https://reenchantmentoftheworld.blog/2024/04/17/lisa-feldman-barrett-seven-and-a-half-lessons-about-the-brain-2020/. A really great book and very accessible, too. Historical, I would recommend Saxon Stories series by Bernard Cornwell – perhaps you’ve seen The Last Kingdom TV series? I was very bad at writing reviews for it, but here you can find the review for the third installment – https://reenchantmentoftheworld.blog/2021/05/11/bernard-cornwell-the-lords-of-the-north-2007/. As for biography, I can heartily recommend Nixonland, but you’ve got to be in a mood for controversial 😀 https://reenchantmentoftheworld.blog/2022/06/27/rick-perlstein-nixonland-the-rise-of-a-president-and-the-fracturing-of-america-2008/. Hope something among these catches your fancy!

            1. Ola, thank you so much for your thoughtful recommendations. I’m going to go with a lighter “beach read” (we’re vacationing in Florida in June) in “Seven and a Half Lessons about the Brain.” I find that subject fascinating, and your review sold me.

Not sure if you’re a gamer. My most revisited game on my PS5 is “Crusader Kings 3.” I have no doubt you would adore that game.

Have a great rest of your week. I’ve just added that book to my Amazon cart 😉

            2. Oh, I’ super happy you went with one of my recommendations, hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did! It’s a deceptively simple book, but I was really impressed by the argument that she’s been building throughout – it is a very empowering one, I think, particularly important for parents of kids 😀
Haven’t heard of Crusader Kings, will check it out! My household leans more toward Spider-Man and Fallen Order types of games, with the odd Witcher for company 😉

            3. Seriously, thanks again. My only time for reading is the summer break, and I love compiling lists beforehand. CK3 is like an RPG strategy that deals just as much with character personality as conquests. Heck, you don’t even have to battle. You can just relax on an island, create a religion, and raise kids. LOVE WITCHER!

  7. I’ve never seen it…but for the comment you had…it’s always hard to beat Woody Allen…although many would like to lol…no I’m a huge fan of his movies.

      1. Oh yes! I have watched a few modern ones…but my favorite period is from Take The Money and Run to The Purple Rose of Cairo in 1985.
