“But it’s good. It’s my life.”
-Becky (Juliette Lewis) from What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
It’s good. It’s my list.
It was an absolute joy reflecting on 50 formative movie favorites of mine, recalling who I saw them with, and realizing how much the 1980s complete me (fourteen titles from that whacky decade made my list).
I’ll take the hit on the lack of Westerns and sci-fi. That’s just not who I am. You won’t see any Stanley Kubrick here either. My only regret is not being able to fit in anything Akira Kurosawa, Agnès Varda, or William Friedkin. However, I do seem to have an interesting predilection for sequels.
If anything, my list has been chance to walk in the shoes of my favorite movie characters—both the good and the bad—by way of cinematic proxy.
The rankings became more superfluous as I approached my Top 10, but all fifty of these titles are near and dear to me either in my memory or my Letterboxd Watchlist for another repeat.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to conversations about these movies and for sharing your favorites as well.
The moviegoing journey certainly doesn’t end here. It just seemed like the right time to document my nostalgia through the gift of movie nerdom, empathy, and escape. It has been a fulfilling project, for sure.
Thank you to all my movie-loving friends,
Reely Bernie

Hey, that’s not bad. I’m a little ahead because I’m older and managed a Blockbuster Video in the 90s 😉

I miss Blockbuster. I fond memories of going there as a kid. That would honestly be a dream job for me now.

Brick and mortar created communities. It was a dream job for sure. I miss it. Streaming ain’t the same.

Firstly, I love a lot of the movies on your list.
I am curious about Friday the 13th Part II, being on your list, instead of the original, it is usually the other way around for most fans of the series.

Thank you for your kind words and awesome question. The Friday the 13th series marks my first horror series I saw with my best friend when we were much too young. After a bunch of sleepovers and viewings, we both agreed that the original’s reveal of the mother being the “bad guy” was lame, Part 2 gave us the most scares and laughs, and the rest (with Jason wearing a hockey mask) were good ole predictable campy fun. Really, Part 2 is a nostalgic nod for all of those fun horror movies in the basement, and I remember Part 2’s ending made me literally jump off the couch!

Writing a list such as this of course opens you up to plenty of critiques and criticisms. So much content out there, and much of it may not be interesting to you. Every one is entitled to their opinion. People can accept it or not. But it remains yours.
For me, Amadeus is a top 3 for me, with Shawshank and Jaws sharing it. I have seen Amadeus so many times. The music and performances as the board fabulous. The YouTube Making of Amadeus is well worth checking out.
I note that you don’t have any Ridley Scott films here. I would have a few like Blade Runner, Alien and Gladiator.
I also note that the Disney animation you chose was Bambi. I would choose differently as Finding Nemo, Pinocchio and Snow White would all eclipse Bambi.
Your comedy choices are fun, and I would not have Weekend at Bernie’s at all. Or Three Amigos. For comedy I would have Monty Python, Something About Mary, or even A Fish Called Wanda.
Not many Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks movies.
I have done in separate posts Top Lists (which Roger Ebert hated doing) and Nov 11 2019 I also did a Top 10 War Films.
A fun exercise. Keep on writing!! Cheers! Robbie

I can’t fault the list since Amadeus was No 1 and every review Bernie wrote was A1 to read. What’s your next goal in blog universe Bernie? I hope music pieces from 50 to 1. Or better 500 – to 1.

Bravo, Amadeus! A masterpiece 🙂
Hmmm… for now, I’ll probably stick to a 2023 Top Ten for movies and then go from there. January is musical production season at our school, so that’ll take most of my time apart from the kiddos. Right now, I’m excited for December and Christmas. Always a pleasure, Matt!

That is an incredible list! Mine would be weird…Citizen Kane at the top and some 1970s B movies in my top twenty… Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry and Gone in 60 Seconds…
Have you ever made a list of movies that are…so bad they are good?

Max, you are all about “1970s B movies,” haha!
That might be fun: So bad they are good. Those are such great guilty pleasures, aren’t they?
Future project for sure!
