Something must be said about the over-the-top goofy dad.
That’s my dad.
And, he kind of looked like Chevy Chase back in the 80s.
Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold possesses an unrestrained enthusiasm for his family and their road trip to Wally World—a fictional adventure park that supposedly brings solutions to parental challenges and reward for any dad who gets to be a dad.
We know the trip is going to be a disaster, but the Chevy/Clark duo is a practice of endearing resiliency that makes me laugh and reminds me not only of my dad but the words my dad would say when I find myself facing similar fiascos while on vacation.
I can hear Chevy’s voice and my dad’s voice when I recall the western themed restaurant scene:
Hey, Yellabelly, I’m talking to you!
Hey, Tenderfoot, move your chicken wings, turkey!
And, how about that “family truckster?”

For me, my favorite movies are less about the quotes and more about hearing the quotes in my head days and even years later. The tone quality, inflection, and scansion are like music to me. So, when I quote or sing the lyrics to “Deep River,” I don’t think of the message, context, or melody. Rather, I instantly hear Chevy Chase singing it in his car to his family. My dad does his impression all the time.

“It’s all part of the experience” is what you get most out of National Lampoon’s Vacation, especially when you think of it while going on your own family vacation.
One of the camping huts will smell (“Edna, this is your tent”).
A detour might land you in the middle of a desert:
Russ: “Wow, Dad, we must have jumped that rail by like 50 yards.”
Clark: “Nothing to be proud of, Russ…[proudly to himself] FIF-TY yards.”
And, all the mishaps might make you want to turn around and go back home. “Well, I’ll tell you something: this is no longer a vacation. It’s a quest. It’s a quest for fun! I’m gonna have fun, and you’re gonna have fun…” (you know the rest if you’re a true follower of the movie).
Chevy does lose it in the end. Twice. But, it always made him out to be more human in my eyes. Now that I’m a dad, I downright empathize.
The over-the-top goofy dad and his beloved family finally get to Wally World and ride down the Colossus roller coaster to “Dancin’ Across the USA” by Lindsey Buckingham (a young John Candy in tow).
“Vacation” is a tribute to my dad and all the efforts he put into making his three sons happy. We are grateful, Dad, and I’m glad I watched this movie with you many times as a kid.

I think I quote something from this film at least once a week lol…

Vacation is such a fun road movie, comedy, and start to a franchise. It’s nice that it makes you think of your dad. I too love to quote movies with the right tone and inflection.

I’m blessed that my goofy dad made me a goofy dad. There is patience involved in both the movie’s blunders and life in general 🙂

I saw this long after it was released … enjoyed it and tried to watch the sequels, but the magic that had burned bright in the first one just wasn’t there for me. 🙂

Yeah, European Vacation was atrocious. I still love Christmas Vacation during the holidays. I have yet to see the Vacation reboot. But, overall, I agree with you: There’s nothing like the original 🙂

A lovely tribute post to your father. I also wrote about my Dad in my review of this movie: ‘Many of the antics of Clark Griswold (played by Chevy Chase) reminded me a lot from my own Dad’. This movie is my top 100 as well. I have so many fond memories of it. As kids we learnt stuff from it, ‘naughty’ stuff too, but it made us wiser (kinda) as we were coming of age. There are great family values espoused in this movie which you don’t really see much of anymore.
“You think you hate it now…wait ’til you drive it.“ haha So many classic lines in this movie.
Bernie, have you seen the rebooted Vacation movie? It was surprisingly good. My kids love it although I much prefer the original which they haven’t seen as I haven’t got a copy in Spánish.
‘When I quote or sing the lyrics to “Deep River,” I don’t think of the message, context, or melody. Rather, I instantly hear Chevy Chase singing it in his car to his family.’ That’s it! It’s iconic and converted into something culturally enduring.
As always, it was a pleasure to read your review. Thanks.

“It’s iconic and converted into something culturally enduring.” – I totally agree, and I’m so happy you have a similar connection to your dad regarding this hilarious 80s flick. So quotable, so endearing. And, yes, it was very rated R (at least at the time). Language and nudity were pushed to the limits on this one. Thank you for your kind words and share. I wish you a pleasant week! I’ll be sure to check out your “Vacation” review soon too!

Have mercy. My mom’s maiden name is Griswold. Oh, the poking my family has taken. I was shielded a bit. Out of the 10 grandkids, I am the only one with a different last name.

Wow, thank you, my oldest son! In these crazy times today, it’s nice to hear about POSITIVE memories of your childhood. I’m glad VACATION made the Top 50. It’s on my list as well.
I still refer to Clark Griswold as the best example of PATIENCE. I would have lost it long before he did, and give yourself some credit….., you and your brothers were great kids!
I’m hoping that Christmas Vacation earns a spot in your Favorite 50, too.
That movie is now MUST SEE with all the family holiday favorites every December.
Love, Baba

Daddy-oh-ho! Yes, Clark Griswold’s patience is what makes him so endearing, and you displayed that as well with all of us. Love you, and I can’t wait to see you later in June!

I hope the movie that reminds you of your mom isn’t “Mommy Dearest” :). Nice tribute to your dad and as his wife of 46 years, I kinda have to agree! Xoxo
